3 Life-Changing Quotes from Kobe Bryant to Harness the Black Mamba Mentality
He wasn’t just great. He was iconic. And when you think Kobe Bryant, you don’t just think about all the impossible shots he has made in his career. You think about the man with a brilliant mind and dedication to his legacy. There’s a reason he’s called the Black Mamba.
Today is a sad day. Kobe Bryant, along with his daughter Gianna, were killed along side 7 other people in a helicopter crash yesterday morning.
I have always loved watching basketball. It’s a game, more than any other Sport (not including the Olympics), dominated by individuals, with truly incredible, more-than-human like skill sets. It is fun to watch. It is every kid’s dream to become this great. But only a few in the NBA have risen to true greatness, accompanied by names that can be counted on one hand, maybe two.
Kobe was different. He didn’t just have skills. Kobe is all-time great because he always approached everything with the attitude that to be the best, you have to outwork everybody else. It was a combination of this work ethic and ability to master every facet of his game through a relentless pursuit of excellence that set him apart.
The guy never cheated his fans and he was an incredible example of what it takes to always do your absolute best, regardless of what that is.
And how do you follow up a legendary basketball career? Let’s start with winning an Academy Award. His poem “Dear Basketball,” written on his retirement from the Lakers, was turned into an animated short that won an Oscar in 2018.
This wasn’t just his way of thinking about the game. It was his way of life. He did everything with heart and conviction. Kobe has been a huge inspiration of mine and I have to say that having adopted the same mentality in my own life as is the Mamba’s, I have so much to thank him for.
In honour of Kobe’s brilliance and legacy, I am sharing three quotes from Kobe Bryant that has served me as incredible life lessons and actionable steps to developing the Mamba mentality:
1. “Outwork your potential.”
His words. His actions. This is taking what you think is your absolute ceiling and breaking the wall down. Put in the work. Stop fucking around. Believe in yourself. Be self-aware. Be accountable. Nobody could touch Kobe Bryant’s effort. But it was always about being better than he was the day before. That was Kobe’s mindset.
2. “You can learn a lot more from the failures than the success’s.”
This is what made Kobe so great. He never allowed his failures to own him because he always used them as a means to grow stronger. Kobe was an emotionally intelligent human being. He always exercised perspective and it showed on the court and his life. He always had his eye on the big picture and never allowed any setbacks from changing his pursuit to greatness.
3. “Dreams should be pure. I think a lot of times, we’re born into this world. We actually wind up going backwards and it seems that the more we mature, the more responsible our dreams become. And the more constraints we put in ourselves and our ability to dream. And to reimagine. It’s a matter of protecting your dreams and protecting your imagination.”
Last and my absolute favorite. It’s so important to protect our dreams. When it’s pure, we are connected to it more than ever. We can begin to visual everything about the dream from how we feel when it is self-actualized, to every step along the way of this journey. A pure dream is also not corrupted. There is no back voice telling you that you can’t do it because certain stigmas in society reject you. No self-judgment. It’s our greatest source of ambition and drive. This is what made Kobe great. His ability to live his dream.
